Passenger Plane Crashes in Venezuela

Venezuela plane crash A Conviasa passenger plane with 47 people on board has crashed. The ATR 42 twin-turboprop, came down shortly after leaving Manuel Carlos Piar airport, outside Ciudad Guayana.

Bolivar State Governor Francisco Rangel Gomez said at least 23 survivors were being treated in hospital. Unconfirmed reports said 13 people had been killed.

The plane crashed just 12 minutes after takeoff about six miles from the airport in Guayana, said Rangel Gomez. Aerial footage shows the plane crashed in an industrial junkyard.

The pilots reported technical problems before it crashed of the aircraft. The plane was en route to the island of Margarita.

The aircraft belongs to the government-owned Conviasa airline and crashed in Bolivar state, said civil protection official Jose Zamora of the Sidor municipality.
