At least 50 people have died in a plane crash Wednesday when a TransAsia twin-turboprop ATR-72 aircraft was carrying 54 passengers and 4 crew when it attempted to land on Penghu in the Taiwan Strait. The region was still being pounded by heavy rain in the wake of Typhoon Matmo, which closed the stock markets and schools Tuesday before moving onto China.
Aviation officials said flight TNA222 aborted its initial landing and then crashed, local media reported.
